Lars Johansson (CSO at Antaros Medical) will present on the value of imaging in clinical drug development in obesity/diabetes and downstream disorders including liver, kidney and heart disease at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) annual meeting 2025 in Vienna.
In recent years, the landscape of diabetes and obesity pharmacotherapy has been transformed. New drugs have demonstrated not only substantial weight loss but also significant improvements in blood glucose control. As the number of therapies in this space continues to grow, it becomes increasingly important to look beyond the number on the scale and assess broader markers of disease modification.
Imaging techniques can play a pivotal role in this evaluation. Imaging-based body composition analysis turns “weight loss” into a meaningful, health-focused outcome by revealing what is changing — distinguishing between reductions in fat mass, preservation of lean muscle, and shifts in visceral fat distribution as well as looking into muscle composition. Such insights provide a deeper understanding of a treatment’s true physiological impact.
Beyond body composition, advanced imaging can also assess treatment effects on metabolically linked organs — including the liver, heart, kidneys, and brain — offering a more comprehensive picture of therapeutic benefit and potential disease-modifying effects.
